Machtum lies in the Moselle region in the country's south-east; the loop alternates between vines, fields and short stretches of woodland. At 7.8 km, the circuit takes roughly 2½ hours. The route gathers about 190 m of ascent.
Field and forest tracks alternate with quiet back roads. Like every Auto-Pédestre, the loop is permanently waymarked with the blue symbol and can be started at any point.
